Description

The University of Groningen was founded in 1614, during a short period of armistice. It was mainly intended as a place of education for civil and church administrators and philologists, as well as lawyers and doctors.

In recent centuries, the history of Groningen has followed the same path as all important Dutch cities. Emerging industries such as dairy production, textiles, tobacco and breweries became important employers.
