TWAS-icipe Fellowship Program for Developing Countries’ Scholars, and applications are submitted till 15th September 2016. The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) is offering fellowship program for developing countries’ Scholars (other than Kenya). Fellowships are awarded for undertaking PhD or postdoctoral studies. Postdoctoral fellowships are tenable for a minimum period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months at the departments of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). PhD fellowships will be awarded for a minimum period of 6 months and a maximum period of 12 months (for those registered for a PhD in a developing country) and for a period of up to 3 years (for those not registered for a PhD in their home country). Award No: Three PhD fellowships and one postdoctoral fellowship will be awarded.

Scholarship Duration: TWAS-icipe Postdoctoral Fellowships in natural sciences are tenable for a minimum period of six months to a maximum period of twelve months at the departments of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Kenya. SANDWICH Fellowships (for those registered for a PhD in a developing country): The Fellowship may be granted for a minimum period of 6 months and a maximum period of 12 months. Full-time Fellowships (for those not registered for a PhD in their home country): The Fellowship is granted for a period of up to 3 years. Candidates will register for their PhD at any university in a developing country.

Scholarship covers: Icipe will provide a standard monthly allowance which should be used to cover living costs, such as accommodation, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency.

Description

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi, Kenya, and TWAS offer three TWAS-icipe Fellowship per year to young scientists from developing countries (other than Kenya) who wish to undertake their PhD and Postdoctoral studies in Kenya.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for TWAS-icipe Fellowship, you must be:

‣ be permanent residents in a developing country (other than Kenya);

‣ be a maximum of between 35 and 40 years of age by 31 December in the year of application (for PhD);


‣ hold a university degree (minimum qualification is a Master’s degree) or PhD degree in a field of the natural sciences;


‣ provide evidence that s/he will return to their home country/country on completion of the fellowship;


‣ not take up other assignments during the period of his/her fellowship;


‣ be financially responsible for any accompanying family member;


‣ have official acceptance at an eligible department, institution or laboratory at icipe.


Applicants for sandwich postgraduate fellowships must:

  • Be permanent residents in a developing country (other than Kenya);
  • Hold a university degree (minimum qualification is a Master’s degree);
  • Be registered Ph.D. Students in a developing country and provide a ‘Registration and No Objection Certificate’ from their home university;
  • Have a letter of agreement of his/her supervisor in his/her home country and an acceptance letter from an eligible department, institution or laboratory of the ICIPE. Both the home and the host supervisors are obligated to collaborate, in order to accompany the development of the awardee’s research;
  • There is no age limit for these positions.
  • Provide evidence of proficiency in English, if the medium of education was not English;
  • Provide evidence that s/he will return to her/his home country on completion of the fellowship;
  • Not take up other assignments during the period of her/his fellowship;
  • Be financially responsible for any accompanying family members,
  • Not hold any temporary or permanent residency in Kenya or any developed country.

‣ TWAS-icipe Fellowship Applicants should submit the acceptance letter from the chosen department to TWAS when applying or by the deadline at the latest.

‣ Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.

‣ Reference letters: Referees must send signed letters as attachments via e-mail directly to TWAS only.

‣ The subject line must contain: icipe/PDoc/candidate’s surname. Alternatively, letters should be sent by post in sealed envelopes. Applicants to the TWAS-icipe Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme should send their application to TWAS only.


Supporting Material: Required documents are:

  • For sandwich fellowships (only if already registered for a Ph.D. in the HOME country), applicants must ensure that the Vice-Chancellor or Registrar of the university sends a signed copy of the ‘Registration and No Objection Certificate’ on institutional headed paper to TWAS.
  • Registration at a university in Kenya is not the same as preliminary acceptance from ICIPE.  To be eligible applicants must have a preliminary acceptance letter from ICIPE.
  • Applicants should submit the acceptance letter from the chosen department/lab at ICIPE to TWAS when applying, or by the deadline at the latest. Without preliminary acceptance, the application will not be considered for selection.
  • Reference letters must be on letter-headed paper, SIGNED and sent as attachments via e-mail to TWAS and ICIPE. The subject line must contain ICIPE/PG/ and the candidate’s surname. N.B. Only signed reference letters can be accepted. The letters can be submitted either by the referee or by the applicant directly.
  • Applicants to the TWAS-ICIPE Postgraduate Fellowship Programme should send their application to TWAS only.
