, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Nepal, Oman Pakistan, The Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Syria, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen can apply for this scholarship (but preference will be given tothose countries where English is not widely spoken, particularly: Japan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.

Benefits

Award No: Thirty admitted applicants will be granted a full scholarship, provided by the Nippon Foundation.

Scholarship Duration: This 18 – 21 months (depending on English proficiency) intensive academic programme begins in March 2013.

Scholarship Covers: Students selected to participate in the APS programme receive a full scholarship that covers tuition, airfare, transit and some visa costs for all programme components, and a monthly stipend.  The programme facilititates up to 30 students per cohort.

Description

The Asian Peacebuilders Scholarship (APS), a Dual Degree Master of Arts Programme, is a shared initiative of The Nippon Foundation, the UN Mandated University for Peace (UPEACE), and Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU). The objective of the programme is to train young Asian professionals to become peace building practitioners, ready to take up leading positions in organisations across the globe. In particular, the programme serves to strengthen the representation of Asian professionals with expertise in Asian issues.

The programme offers intensive, specialised language training to facilitate participation of professionals with lower levels of English proficiency, study in Costa Rica and the Philippines, as well as the hands-on design and implementation of an intensive field project in Asia.  Scholars obtain 2 MA degrees, one from the University for Peace (UPEACE) in an area related to peace building and the second from Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) in Political Science with major in Global Politics.

Eligibility

The Nippon Foundation Asian Peace builders Scholarship applications are accepted from students all over Asia, with preference given to students who:

  1. Have at least 2 years work experience in a relevant field. Excellent candidates with less work experience are considered for participation on a case-by-case basis. Voluntary work, internships and student activities may be considered as work experience, if relevant for the programme.
  2. Have Bachelor’s degree from a reputable institution.
  3. Demonstrate a compelling desire to work on issues related to peace and conflict.
  4. Demonstrate a commitment to learning in an international and multi-cultural environment.
  5. Are from countries where English is not widely spoken, particularly, but not limited to, Japan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING AN APPLICATION

The Asian Peacebuilders Scholarship is a dual degree programme with the University for Peace (UPEACE), and Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) with the support and collaboration from The Nippon Foundation. Although the programme encompasses elements from the two institutions, the admissions process is facilitated by UPEACE.

UPEACE accepts applications in electronic format only through our on-line application form.  Applicants are therefore advised to first collect all supporting documents and other required information before submitting the form. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

The documentation and information provided in an application reflects on the quality of the applicant. Please be sure that it is complete and accurate and that all essays and supplementary materials are representative of the applicant’s work. It is not acceptable to misrepresent accomplishments; borrow from the works of others without proper acknowledgment; or to submit material that has been written, re-written, or heavily edited by others. Breaches of these protocols will result in immediate rejection of the application.

 

ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

The on-line application form can be accessed as many times as needed with the login and password provided the first time an applicant enters the system. The form has a “save” button that allows the applicant to save the information and go back to the form at a later time.   It is imperative to collect all of the data and supporting documents before clicking the submit button. Finally, in addition to gathering the required documents it is very important to carefully read the information provided below relating to the individual sections within the on-line form.

Should admission be granted, the following documents will be be required in official hard copy upon confirmation of enrollment:

  • English Proficiency Test Scores Report (TOEFL, IELTS) - if applicable
  • Official Undergraduate Transcripts and Copy of Diploma
  • Ten passport size photos

Upon submission of the on-line application form and supporting uploaded documents, the UPEACE Admissions system will send an automatic confirmation email. The date and time of submission will be noted in the system. Applications received after the established deadline will be transferred for the subsequent academic year.

Each application received by the established deadline will be reviewed for completeness. A second acknowledgment will be sent to the applicant by the Admissions Officer informing whether or not the application is complete and able to be passed on for academic review.
