Scholarship Tenure : The duration of the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program is for one year.

Value of Scholarship : -Stipends are funded up to $75,000 for one year with additional funds for project expenses. Some support for relocation expenses is provided where relevant. If so directed, Radcliffe will pay the stipend to the fellow’s home institution.

-Fellows receive office or studio space and access to libraries and other resources of Harvard University during the fellowship year, which extends from early September 2016 through May 31, 2017. Visual, film, and video artists may apply to come for either one or two semesters. In the event that they come for one semester, the stipend is $37,500. Fellows are expected to be free of their regular commitments so that they may devote themselves full time to the work outlined in their proposal. Since this is a residential fellowship, we expect fellows to reside in the Boston area during that period and to have their primary office at the Institute to participate fully in the life of the community.

The Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program is a scholarly community where individuals pursue advanced work across a wide range of academic disciplines, professions, and creative arts.

Radcliffe Institute fellowships are designed to support scholars, scientists, artists, and writers of exceptional promise and demonstrated accomplishment who wish to pursue work in academic and professional fields and in the creative arts.

The Radcliffe Institute encourages applications in all disciplines and on any topic In recognition of Radcliffe’s historic contributions to the education of women and to the study of issues related to women, the Radcliffe Institute sustains a continuing commitment to the study of women, gender, and society.

Applicants’ projects need not focus on gender, however. Women and men from across the United States and throughout the world, including developing countries, are encouraged to apply. We seek to build a community of fellows that is diverse in every way. Former fellows of the Radcliffe Institute (2000 to present) are not eligible to apply for Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program

Eligibility

Individual Humanists and Social Scientists:

‣ Scholars in any field with a doctorate or appropriate terminal degree at least two years prior to appointment (by December 2016) in the area of the proposed project are eligible to apply. Only scholars who have published at least two articles in refereed journals or edited collections are eligible to apply.

The Radcliffe Institute encourages applications in all disciplines and on any topic. Applicants whose projects draw on the resources of the Institute's Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America (the country's foremost archive in women's history) are looked on favorably, but such a focus is not a requisite for applying.

We particularly welcome applications related to the theme of citizenship -- local, national, and global -- as part of a two-year initiative on this topic at the Institute.

Individual Creative Artists:

‣ Please note that artists and writers need not have a Ph.D. or an M.F.A. to apply; however, they must meet other specific eligibility requirements, listed below. Applicants in creative arts cannot be students in doctoral or master’s programs at the time of application submission unless the dissertation has been accepted by advisors.

Group Applicants in the Humanities and Social Sciences: 

‣  All members of a group applying in the Humanities and Social Sciences must have earned their doctorate by December 2016. 

‣  Only scholars who have published at least two articles in journals or edited collections or one refereed journal are eligible to apply. 

‣  To gain consideration, the convener(s) of such a group should have submitted a letter of intent (one to three pages) describing the group’s focus, aims, and membership, a list of participants and their curriculum vitae to Fellowship Program Associate Dean Judith Vichniac, e-mailed to fellowships-at-radcliffe.harvard.edu  by May 15, 2017, for the fellowship year 2018–2019.

Group Applicants in the Creative Arts:

‣ All members of a group applying in the Creative Arts must meet the individual eligibility requirements, listed above, specific to their field. ‣ To gain consideration, the convener(s) of such a group should have submitted a letter of intent (one to three pages) describing the group’s focus, aims, and membership, a list of participants and their curriculum vitae to Fellowship Program Associate Dean Judith Vichniac, e-mailed to  fellowships@radcliffe.harvard.edu by May 15, 2017, for the fellowship year 2018–2019.

Group Applicants in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics:

‣ All members of a group applying in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics must have received their doctorate by December 2016.

‣ This is not intended to serve as a postdoctoral fellowship. Please note applicants cannot be students in a degree program at the time of application submission. 

‣ To gain consideration, the convener(s) of such a group should have submitted a letter of intent (one to three pages) describing the group’s focus, aims, and membership, a list of participants and their curriculum vitae to Fellowship Program Associate Dean Judith Vichniac, e-mailed to fellowships@radcliffe.harvard.edu by May 15, 2017, for the fellowship year 2018–2019.

Selection Criteria for Radcliffe Institute Fellowship Program

‣ Each application is reviewed in a dual-tiered process by peers in relevant disciplines. Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the applicant’s record of achievement and promise. 

‣ Applicants are notified of the results of the selection process in March. Cluster proposals from two to three individuals, all of whom fit the criteria status for individual applicants, will be accepted for review. Cluster proposals are due by June 1, 2015.

Selection Process

  • Applications are judged on the quality and significance of the proposed project and the applicant’s record of achievement and promise. 
  • Applicants are notified of the results of the selection process in March. If circumstances change that make it impossible for you to accept an offer from us, please let us know as soon as possible so we can withdraw your application from consideration. 
  • In addition, if you are offered another fellowship, please contact us to let us know before accepting. Cluster proposals from two to three individuals, all of whom fit the criteria status for individual applicants, will be accepted for review. Cluster proposals are due by May 15, 2017.
