PhD position in Diatom Biology and Photobiology at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris ‐ France 2014

PhD position in Diatom Biology and Photobiology at Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris ‐France , and contact Angela Falciatore (angela.falciatore@upmc.fr) for application deadlines. The proposed research project will be developed in the context of a recently approved Marie Curie Iniitial Training Network (ITN) named CALIPSO (Ca2+ and light signals in photosynthetic organisms), an interdisciplinary research network aiming at identifying signalling events that control photosynthesis and metabolism. CALIPSO is an example of true translational research and training of young researchers in communicating and transferring achievements from different model organisms directly to industrial partners (http://itn‐calipso.univie.ac.at/). Description

BACKGROUND about PhD position in Diatom Biology and Photobiology

Diatoms represent a key phytoplankton group in contemporary oceans. Contributing at least 20% of the CO2 assimilation, diatoms are key players in global climate control.

Our research goal is to provide novel information on regulatory factors controlling the diatom growth, their physiological and ecological versatility and adaptation in response to environmental changes. Because light is a key environmental signal for photosynthetic organisms, we are focusing our research on diatom light sensing and acclimation mechanisms.

Initial results indicate that the light mediated processes are orchestrated by complex signalling pathways and regulatory networks that are now beginning to be deciphered at the molecular level.

Aim of the PhD research project is to provide novel insights about the molecular mechanisms regulating light responses in diatoms, by focusing on the characterization of the signalling cascades downstream the blue light cryptochrome (CPF1) and the red/far‐red Phytochrome (Dphy) photoreceptors in the model species Phaeodactylum tricornutum. In particular, the novel roles of these photoreceptors in regulating growth and chloroplast activity will be investigated.

The research activity will provide the student with experiences in the following fields: Diatom physiology; Photobiology; Functional and comparative genomics; Biochemistry; Molecular and cell biology
