Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study Fellowships for international students, and applications are submitted till 15 April 2017 (for Individual Scholars with a non-Dutch affiliation 2018/19) 1 August 2017 (for Individual Scholars with a Dutch affiliation 2018/19) . Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) offers residential fellowships from prominent researchers and senior scholars in the humanities and social sciences. At least 3 years of post-PhD degree academic experience is required for eligibility. NIAS fellowships are in principle awarded for advanced research during a full academic year. Fellows are offered an office at the institute and a studio apartment or family apartment.  Full details:

‣ Scholarship Duration:  NIAS fellowships are in principle awarded for advanced research during a full academic year, running from 1 September till 30 June, or for one semester, i.e. from 1 September to 31 January or 1 February to 30 June.

‣ Scholarship covers:
 Office and support: Fellowships at NIAS are residential fellowships. The NIAS Fellow will be allotted an office in the main building with a personal computer and

 internet connection, and be entitled to the use of the library service and a limited amount of support.
-Accommodation: Currently, free accommodation in a studio apartment on campus in Wassenaar (or equivalent housing) is offered to unaccompanied Fellows from outside the Netherlands. Also in Amsterdam studio apartments near the institute will be available. A possible net contribution to be paid for the (fully furnished) studio apartments will be determined at a later stage. In Wassenaar, housing at subsidised rate is currently offered to NIAS Fellows from outside the Netherlands who bring their partners or families. Accommodation is offered in apartments and family homes in Wassenaar at a subsidized rate. In Amsterdam apartments for families will be offered in the area of Amstelveen (south of Amsterdam). The net contribution to be paid for the (fully furnished) family apartments in 2017/2018 will be determined at a later stage.
-Stipends and replacement subsidies for regular NIAS Fellows: NIAS may offer a stipend to researchers from abroad in the case of loss of income and may offer a replacement subsidy to Dutch universities to compensate for the loss of teaching hours of the researcher.
-Lunches, coffee/tea, academic and social activities: Lunches on weekdays, coffee and tea in the main building, as well as the monthly contribution to academic and social activities are included in the fellowship.
-Travel costs: The Institute will reimburse non-Dutch Fellows’ travel costs to and from NIAS (not family) once.

Eligibility

‣ Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study Fellowships Fellows are selected from prominent researchers and senior scholars in the humanities and social sciences who have already made a contribution to their field. At least 3 years of post-PhD degree academic experience is required for eligibility.

Selection Criteria: 

‣ Scholarly achievements, obtained grants and awards, and reputation and quality of publications are aspects considered in the evaluation process.

‣ Moreover, the added value of the proposed project for the Dutch scientific community is an important criterion for selection.

‣ Preference is given to:
-Applicants who propose an interdisciplinary project
-A project that is closely related to an already externally funded project.

Notification:

‣ Applicants for regular NIAS Fellowships for non-Dutch scholars will be notified in September, five months after the application deadline.

Scholarship Application Method

‣ Applicants are required to sent the completed applications by e-mail to: Application-at-NIAS.KNAW.NL.

A complete application consists of:

  1. a completed application form
  2. a research proposal describing the work that you propose to carry out at NIAS (maximum 1500 words, references excluded).
  3. a curriculum vitae (max. 1 page)
  4. a list of (major) publications of the last 5 years in refereed journals/books (max. 1 page)
  5. two publications (articles or books, in pdf) in support of the application. (Books in support of the application may also be sent by regular mail. Please address to NIAS, Academic Affairs, PO Box 108551001 EW Amsterdam,The Netherlands)

For applicants affiliated to a non-Dutch university:

6. it is advised (but not compulsory) to attach a letter in support of the application by an internationally known scholar from a university or research institute in the Netherlands.

Application Forms will only be accepted in Word Format.

Only NIAS Fellowship applications that meet the eligibility criteria will be taken into consideration. You will be notified by e-mail if your application fulfils the eligibility criteria and has been sent on for external review. You will be given an indication of when to expect the outcome of the selection procedure.

Please note, that the number of scholars expressing interest always exceeds the places available.
