Scholarship Duration:  These NIH scholarships are awarded for 1 year and can be renewed up to 4 years.

Scholarship covers:  The NIH UGSP will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to scholarship recipients. In return, recipients commit to two types of service obligation for each year of scholarship: (1) 10-week summer service as a paid employee in an NIH research laboratory and (2) after graduation, 1 year of full-time paid employment in an NIH research laboratory.

The National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research.

The program offers:Scholarship support,Paid research training at the NIH during the summer and Paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all of these requirements in order to be eligible for admission into the UGSP.

‣ U.S.A. citizen or U.S.A. permanent residen;

‣ Enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student at an accredited 4-year undergraduate institution located in the United States of America

‣ Undergraduate University Grade Point Average of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0-point scale or within the top 5 percent of your class
;

‣ Having ‘Exceptional Financial Need’ as certified by your undergraduate institution financial aid office


Selection Criteria:

‣ Strong applicants are able to demonstrate their commitment to a research career. Applicants are most able to demonstrate this commitment if they have already participated in laboratory research, been involved in extracurricular science activities, or have taken advanced courses relevant to their field.

Notification:

‣ Selection of Scholars will be take place in late July, 2014.

Scholarship Application Method

‣ 
 Applicants are required to apply online.

‣ The UGSP encourages all students considering admission to complete and submit the Exceptional Financial Need (EFN) form to their financial aid office to determine eligibility prior to completing the online application.

‣ Scholarship Applications are due on 3 March 2014.

‣ Recommnedation letters are due by March 31, 2014.
