Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund (GMCTF) Grants for Sudanese Students, and applications are submitted till 28th February, 2015. The Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund awards grants for educational projects and activities in South Sudan and Sudan and for South Sudanese and Sudanese nationals studying for a postgraduate course in the UK. Grants are only made for one year at a time. Grants may be given towards the cost of course fees, and/or food and accommodation, and occasionally for other academic expenses, such as books. In awarding grants, preference will be given to those applicants whose chosen courses will enable them to contribute to the skills base of South Sudan or Sudan, and who demonstrate their intention to return to South Sudan or Sudan after their studies. Field(s): Scholarships are awarded in all disciplines. It is, however, important to the GMCTF that courses studied will enable applicants to contribute to the skills base of Sudan/South Sudan on their return. The GMCTF may give some preference to supporting subjects and areas of study of perceived value to Sudan/South Sudan.

Description

The funds of the Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund are held in Trust and administered by a group of Trustees and an Executive Committee.

The purpose of the Fund is to promote educational development in South Sudan and Sudan.

Grants are available for educational projects and activities in South Sudan and Sudan and for South Sudanese and Sudanese nationals studying for a postgraduate course in the UK who intend to return to South Sudan or Sudan at the end of their studies.

The Trust may also give financial assistance to South Sudanese and Sudanese nationals towards the costs of shorter training programmes, projects and courses in the UK.

Please note that at present due to current difficulties in transferring funds to South Sudan and Sudan it is not possible for the Trust to support individual students studying in South Sudan or Sudan.

Eligibility



To be eligible for consideration for a Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund , student should:

‣ have completed a first degree

‣ have achieved in that degree a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.3 out of 4.0, or a minimum of an upper second class degree (2.1), or equivalent international qualifications

‣ have good written and spoken English and provide evidence of a good score in a recognised English language test, e.g. ITELS or TOEFL

‣ approach two referees who can comment on their suitability for the award of a GMCTF grant, and ask each referee to send their comments on your application to the GMCTF by the due date. Please remember to refer your referees to the Information for referees section of the website. Your application will not be considered by the GMCTF without the letters of support from your referees, and it is your responsibility as the applicant to ask them to send these letters to the GMCTF.

‣ provide information on the total annual cost of their chosen course, including all tuition and bench fees and maintenance costs, what proportion of these costs is available to the student and the source(s) of these funds, as well as the sum requested from the GMCTF

‣ be a national of South Sudan or Sudan

‣ provide information on their visa status

‣ demonstrate that their chosen course will enable them to contribute to the skills base of South Sudan or Sudan, and demonstrate their intention to return to South Sudan or Sudan after their studies.

‣ Please note that if you need a visa to study in the UK, you could find it helpful to look at the UK Border Agency (UKBA) website in preparation for the documents you will have to submit to obtain a visa.

Selection Criteria for Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund

‣ In awarding grants, preference will be given to those applicants whose chosen courses will enable them to contribute to the skills base of South Sudan or Sudan, and who demonstrate their intention to return to South Sudan or Sudan after their studies.

‣ The application form, along with reports from referees, is the basis on which the GMCTF makes its decision on whether to award a grant or not.

‣ There could be various reasons as to why an application is unsuccessful.

‣ Please note that when applying for a grant, particular attention should be given to those sections of the application form dealing with the reasons as to why you have chosen to study a particular course, and to how you would be able, on completion of your course, and on return to Sudan/South Sudan, to contribute to the skills-base of Sudan/South Sudan .

‣ Please note that the GMCTF’s decision on applications is final, and that correspondence cannot be entered into with unsuccessful applicants.

Notification:

‣ All applications will be considered during March 2015 and applicants will be informed of the GMCTF’s decision by the beginning of May 2015.
