GDAI–PhD Scholarships for African Students at SOAS in UK, and applicantions are submitted till 30 April 2017. Applications are invited for Mo Ibrahim Foundation scholarships available for African students at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in UK. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Scholarship is awarded for undertaking PhD research programme (Full time) that directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa. The scholarship is on a part present form and it provides Fees for three years and for accommodation and living cost for the first year only. It is expected that students to be on fieldwork during the second year and to write the thesis in the third year in their country of origin. Award No: One scholarship will be offered.

Scholarship Duration: Scholarship is awarded for three years.

Scholarship covers: The scholarship is on a part-present form and it provides for fees for three years. However, accommodation and living cost are covered for the first year only. The scholarship will also cover in total 2 return flights: one during the first year, and one for the viva (plus one week’s accommodation around the viva). In year 2 and year 3, the successful candidate will also receive an annual stipend of £5,000. It also covers visa cost, provided receipts are submitted to the Centre of African Studies office.

Description

The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has generously provided SOAS with one PhD scholarship per year for African students undertaking a full?time PhD programme in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.

The GDAI–PhD Scholarships are on a part?present form and it provides for fees for three years.

However, accommodation and living cost are covered for the first year only.

The scholarship will also cover in total 2 return flights: one during the first year, and one for the viva (plus one week’s accommodation around the viva).

Eligibility



Have what it takes to avail GDAI–PhD Scholarships ? 

‣ Domicile/Residency: Applicants must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub Saharan Africa.

‣ Eligible Programmes: 

The eligible PhD are only those within the following departments:

Once the place is secured, the applicants can apply for the scholarship. Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a panel consisting of SOAS academic members. The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application. Please provide the following documents by email to ab17@soas.ac.uk:

  • complete application form (see pdf attached on the right side of this page)
  • a copy of the unconditional offer received from SOAS admissions office
  • CV (please include your email address)
  • 2 pages max statement outlining knowledge and interest in governance-related issues
  • Your research proposal (as sent to the SOAS Admissions Office)

Please note that CAS reserves the right not to award scholarships and will only award them where there are applicants judged to meet sufficiently high academic standards and with demonstrable interests in fields relevant to the objectives of the GDAI

Selection Criteria for GDAI–PhD Scholarships

‣ Scholarship candidates will be assessed based on their intended research, academic merit and references. SOAS is committed to accepting only those scholarship candidates who can demonstrate an ability to complete a PhD within three, or at most, four years.

Notification:

‣ The Advisory Panel expects to have made a final decision on the Mo Ibrahim Foundation PhD Scholarships by May of each year. All scholarship candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.

Scholarship Application Method

In order to be considered for funding, applicants must first secure an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER for the PhD by applying directly to the SOAS Doctoral School.
