‣ Scholarship Duration:  In special circumstances a fellowship may be awarded for the fall or spring semester. However, because of the importance to all of programs of developing a community and building relationships,

 preference is given to Fellows able to stay for the 9-month academic year. CASBS is most likely to be flexible about the length of stay for Fellows who are members of group projects.

Scholarship covers: Center Fellows receive an official University “Stanford Fellow” designation and are given an identification card through which they are accorded library privileges at the University Libraries and sports privileges at the University’s sports facilities. As appropriate, stipends for the academic year will be awarded to first-time Fellows to supplement faculty sabbatical support. Returning Fellows are expected to provide their own stipend. The Center provides a range of services designed to make Fellows more effective and efficient while in residence, including:
-library assistance
-network and personal computer maintenance and support
-fax and mail services
-administrative services
-pleasant work spaces at the Center
-housing information for relocating to the Palo Alto area for the fellowship year

Description

‣ The Center offers a  CASBS Residential Fellowship program for scientists and scholars from this country and abroad.

‣ Since 1954, CASBS Fellowships have been awarded to scholars working in a diverse range of disciplines.

‣ These include the five core social and behavioral disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science, psychology and sociology as well as scholars from a wide range of humanistic disciplines, education, linguistics and the biological sciences.

‣ They expect Fellows to ask challenging questions of themselves and others. The Center also expects Fellows to work hard on their scholarly pursuits.

‣ Individuals who have been here often describe their center experience as productive, transformative and the best year of their entire career.

In addition, they expect members of group projects to define metrics for “success,” and periodically to evaluate their progress according to those metrics.

Eligibility

‣  CASBS Residential Fellowship has been awarded to many of the world’s most promising, provocative and productive scholars working in a diverse range of disciplines.

‣ These include the five core social and behavioral disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science, psychology and sociology as well as scholars from a wide range of humanistic disciplines, education, linguistics and the biological, natural, and health sciences.

Selection Criteria for CASBS Residential Fellowship

‣ Several reviewers, including experts in the applicant’s field(s), evaluate each application meeting basic criteria.

‣ The Center’s Fellow Selection Committee, consisting of members from the CASBS Board of Directors and past CASBS Fellows, consider the best-rated applications for CASBS Fellowship awards.

‣ Final roster decisions (for all scholars requesting consideration, including past Fellows) take into account a range of criteria for cohort composition, including, but not limited to: disciplinary balance, institution diversity, and demographic diversity (race/ethnicity, gender, career stage, domestic/international, geographic location). Please note that priority in individual applicant selection will be given to first-time Fellows.

‣ Notifications regarding the  fellowship selection results will be sent in mid-February 2017.
