AFoCo Landmark Graduate Scholarship Program in Korea, and applications are submitted till end of August 2015. Applications are invited for AFoCo Landmark Graduate Scholarship Program to support higher education in the field of forestry in the Republic of Korea (ROK)). The Program in 2016 shall provide the scholarship for a total of four (4) grantees, two (2)PhD and two (2) M.Sc holders. They will start their studies in March 2016. The annual amount provided to a scholarship grantee shall be up to US$22,500. The applicant must be a citizen of one of the ten (10) AFoCo Member Countries. Full details:

Benefits(Value/ Inclusions):

‣ No. of awards: The Program in 2016 shall provide the scholarship for a total of four (4) grantees, two (2) Ph.D. and two (2) M.Sc holders. They will start their studies in March 2016

‣ Scholarship Tenure :  Scholarships are awarded for up to four (4) Semesters, starting from March 2016 for master’s degree and up to six (6) Semesters, starting from March 2016 for doctoral degree program.

Value of Scholarship : The annual amount provided to a scholarship grantee shall be up to US$22,500. Detailed list of scholarship support is as follows:

  • Airfare: Round-trip economy class ticket: Airfare shall be provided only in case of entering ROK before the start of the scholarship period and returning to one’s home country after graduation. The fees for domestic travel within the scholar’s home country and travel insurance to and from ROK shall not be provided.
  • Settlement Allowance: US$400 upon arrival. Only for scholars traveling from their own country, not for scholars currently residing in ROK.
  • Monthly Allowance: US$900 per month
  • Research Allowance: US$1,000 per year for students in the master’s program and US$2,000 per year for students in the doctoral program
  • Language Training Fee (English/Korean): maximum US$500 per Semester, depending on the actual expense.
  • Tuitions: The tuition shall be paid by the AFoCo Secretariat.
  • Dissertation Printing Costs: maximum of US$1,000, depending on the actual expense.
  • Medical Insurance: US$200 per Semester, depending on the actual expense.
  • Publishing of an article in academic journals: Related expense after his/her manuscript is passed and a special reward of US$500 will be given.

Description

‣ The AFoCo Landmark Graduate Scholarship Program (hereinafter referred to as the Program) is designed to provide higher education in the field of forestry in the Republic of Korea (ROK) for the ten (10) AFoCo Member Countries in Southeast Asia, with the aim of promoting capacity building in the forestry sector amongst AFoCo Member Countries.

Eligibility

General requirements for AFoCo Landmark Graduate Scholarship 

‣ The applicant must be a citizen of one of the ten (10) AFoCo Member Countries (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Malaysia,, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam). Important: Applicants who have enrolled in or graduated from a university for an undergraduate, a master’s or a doctoral program in ROK will be disqualified from applying for the Program.

‣ Applicants should be in good health, both mentally and physically, to stay in the ROK for an extended period of time. Applicants must submit the Personal Medical Assessment. A serious illness (For example, HIV, Drug, etc) can be the main cause of disqualification from the scholarship.

‣ Disabled individuals who satisfy the requirements are eligible for the Program.

Requirements for M.Sc. program:

‣ Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or a degree that is equivalent to or higher than a bachelor’s degree as of 1 July 2015.

‣ Minimum Grade point average (G.P.A.) of the bachelor degree required for application is 80 out of the 100 points scales. According to the G.P.A. conversion table (attachment #6), 80 points is equivalent to G.P.A. 2.64 points out of 4.0; 2.80 out of 4.3; 2.91 out of 4.5; or, 3.23 out of 5.0 scales.

‣ Common admission requirements of the four (4) universities: a. Language requirements: Applicants must hold a language certificate in either Korean or English: Level 3 (Kangwon and Kongju Univ.) and level 4 (Chungnam and Chungbuk Univ.) in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK); or TOEFL (PBT550, CBT210, IBT80), TEPS 550, or IELTS 5.5 (or TOEIC 650 for Chungnam Univ., 675 for Chungbuk Univ., 700 for Kangwon University) and b. If a student did not take any of the aforementioned tests, the student must submit a letter of recommendation from a prospective supervisor of the university in lieu of the proficiency language test requirement.

Requirements for Ph.D. program:

‣ Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or a degree that is equivalent to or higher than a Master’s degree as of 1 July 2015.

‣ Minimum Grade point average (G.P.A.) of the bachelor and the master degrees required for application is 80 out of the 100 points scales. According to the G.P.A. conversion table (attachment #6), 80 points is equivalent to G.P.A. 2.64 points out of 4.0; 2.80 out of 4.3; 2.91 out of 4.5; or, 3.23 out of 5.0 scales.

‣ Common admission requirements of the four (4) universities: a. Selection Criteria for AFoCo Landmark Graduate Scholarship 

Preference may be given to applicants:

  • whose previous major is in a field of forestry;
  • who are currently working in forestry agencies in his/her country;
  • who are university professors currently in a field of forestry of his/her country;
  • who have a higher grade point average (G.P.A.) than other applicants;
  • who have English or Korean proficiency; and,
  • who have been awarded and/or have published academic papers.

Notification:

‣ Selection of candidates by the evaluation committee will be between 1~7 September 2015.

Scholarship Application Method 

‣ Applications should be submitted via email. The recommendation letter by the Governing Council (Annex-2) must be sent to the AFoCo Secretariat directly via e-mail. Documents must be written in English or accompanied by a complete English translation authenticated by the issuing institution or notarized by a notary’s office.
