Description

Laboratory of Ecology of Aquatic Systems, Université Libre de Bruxelles - ULB, Belgium) has open 4-year PhD research position at ESA.

‣ The topic of  the research project is " Development of predictive tools of the dynamics and biodegradation potential of aquatic microbial communities in anthropized watersheds."

This project seeks to identify the biological factors that drive the response of aquatic microbial communities to massive organic and chemical pollutions, and at developing predictive tools of their ability to tolerate, resist, exploit pollutants and/or go back to original status (resilience) in river systems under anthropogenic pressure.

For that purpose, a series of hypotheses on biodiversity-stability and biodiversity- functionality relationships in microbial communities have been formulated. They will be tested in the laboratory on model synthetic communities of freshwater bacteria to which different stressors mimicking wastewater release will be applied in controlled conditions. Thereafter, the dynamics of the same communities will be analyzed in more complex systems and eventually compared to in situ data.

The ultimate goal of this project is to develop theories and predictive tools that will contribute to a better management of aquatic microbial communities and their processes in order to protect, value and restore river ecosystem services.
