2016 GDAI–PhD Scholarships for African Students at SOAS in UK, and applicantions are submitted till 30 April 2016. Applications are invited for Mo Ibrahim Foundation scholarships available for African students at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in UK. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Scholarship is awarded for undertaking PhD research programme (Full time) that directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa. The scholarship is on a part present form and it provides Fees for three years and for accommodation and living cost for the first year only. It is expected that students to be on fieldwork during the second year and to write the thesis in the third year in their country of origin. Award No: One scholarship will be offered.

Scholarship Duration: Scholarship is awarded for three years.

Scholarship covers: The scholarship is on a part-present form and it provides for fees for three years. However, accommodation and living cost are covered for the first year only. The scholarship will also cover in total 2 return flights: one during the first year, and one for the viva (plus one week’s accommodation around the viva). In year 2 and year 3, the successful candidate will also receive an annual stipend of £5,000. It also covers visa cost, provided receipts are submitted to the Centre of African Studies office.

Description

‣ The Mo Ibrahim Foundation has generously provided SOAS with one PhD scholarship per year for African students undertaking a full?time PhD programme in the field of Governance for Development in Africa.

‣ The 2016 GDAI–PhD Scholarships are on a part?present form and it provides for fees for three years.

‣ However, accommodation and living cost are covered for the first year only.

‣ The scholarship will also cover in total 2 return flights: one during the first year, and one for the viva (plus one week’s accommodation around the viva).

Eligibility



Have what it takes to avail 2016 GDAI–PhD Scholarships ? 

‣ Domicile/Residency: Applicants must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub Saharan Africa.

‣ Eligible Programmes: PhD Programme (Full time) Research undertaken by scholarship applicants must directly address or be applicable to the issue of Governance in Africa.



Selection Criteria for 2016 GDAI–PhD Scholarships

‣ Scholarship candidates will be assessed based on their intended research, academic merit and references. SOAS is committed to accepting only those scholarship candidates who can demonstrate an ability to complete a PhD within three, or at most, four years.


Notification:

‣ The Advisory Panel expects to have made a final decision on the Mo Ibrahim Foundation PhD Scholarships by May of each year. All scholarship candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application.


Scholarship Application Method

‣ Applications for scholarship funding are separate from applications to the School for a place of study.

‣ Therefore, separate reference letters are required for a Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship.

‣ Please provide two academic references with your application.

‣ The references should be able to comment on your previous research/study and how your intended research is relevant to the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Scholarship scheme.

‣ Preferably, referees should send their references directly to ab17-at-soas.ac.uk, or if this is not possible post their references to the Centre office.

Scholarship Applications are due on 30 April 2016.
