2015 Scholarship for PhD Candidates in International Development Studies in Netherlands , and applications are submitted till 7th September 2014. The AISSR and the Governance and Inclusive Development (GID) are inviting applications for scholarship for PhD candidates in International Development Studies. Total three PhD positions are offered for candidates from Ghana and/or South Africa. Scholarship is available for the PhD positions, totaling EUR 1600 during stays in the Netherlands (50%) and EUR 775 during stays in Ghana/South Africa (50%). The full-time appointments will be for a period of four years (12 months plus a further 36 months contingent on a satisfactory performance during the first year), starting 1 November 2014.  Full details:

Description

The AISSR and the Governance and Inclusive Development (GID) programme group at the University of Amsterdam are looking for three PhD candidates from Ghana and/or South Africa who will participate in the WOTRO-funded research project ‘Inclusive partnerships and innovation platforms for sustainable landscapes and greater food sovereignty among tree crop farmers in Ghana and South Africa’.

This WOTRO-funded research project is directed by dr. Mirjam A.F. Ros-Tonen of the University of Amsterdam in collaboration with partners from Ghana and South Africa, and the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Eligibility

To avail 2015 Scholarship for PhD Candidates, candidates should have the following credentials:


‣ Hold a (Research) Master’s degree in International Development Studies or related disciplines that focus on development issues (Social & Cultural Anthropology, Human Geography, Rural Sociology, etc.).

‣ Candidates who are due to graduate before October 2014 are also welcome to apply.


‣ Excel academically, as shown in the grade transcripts and curriculum vitae;


‣ Have a firm basis in mixed methods and (for PhD3) GIS.


‣ Have experience with fieldwork in the respective study regions; mastering the local language (Twi) in Ghana is considered an asset;


‣ Have an excellent written and spoken command of English;


‣ Have excellent organizational and social skills;


‣ Have the ability and interest to work in a team;


‣ Wish to pursue an academic career.

Scholarship Application Method

‣ 2015 Scholarship for PhD Candidates Applications must include, in a single PDF file:


  • A full curriculum vitae, including publications;

  • Proof of a Master’s degree, including grade transcripts.
  • Candidates, who have not completed their degree at the time of application, must provide an official grade transcript with the expected date of completion.
  • Candidates are required to finish their Master thesis before the start of the PhD project;

  • A motivation letter (maximum 400 words);

  • Names and contact details of two academic references;

  • A recent TOEFL or equivalent English comprehension test score (TOEFL: a minimum average of 6.5 for the total test and a minimum of 6.0 for each test component);

  • In a separate PDF file: at least 1 writing sample (thesis and/or essay or and/or article) which provides evidence of fieldwork experience and ability to theorize.

  • All correspondence will be in English. Applications must be sent as e-mail attachments to m.a.f.ros-tonen-at-uva.nl before 7 September 2014.
